Fort Amherst Overnight Ghost Hunt

As the Fort has over 300 years of military history it should come as no surprise that Fort Amherst is steeped in emotion and that is why it is reputed to be a place where lost souls still reside.
A raid on Chatham Dockyard by a Dutch fleet in 1667 led to the building of Fort Amherst which was designed to protect the route to London.
Fort Amherst in Kent was constructed in 1756 at the southern end of the Brompton lines of defence to protect the southeastern approaches to Chatham Dockyard to defend against French Invasion and is said to be Britain’s finest example of a Georgian Fortress. The maze of underground Tunnels which were dug into the chalk cliffs were used to move ammunition around the fort between 1776 – 1805 they also linked the many areas of the Fort and were built to ensure protection in an attack.
The Fort Amherst tunnels were constructed by Cornish Tin Miners and Board of Ordnance Engineers and not, as legend would say, French Prisoners of War.  This theory may have come about because the Tin Miners spoke Brettaine, which sounds very much like French!
Some of the Fort Amhurst Tunnels are 2,500 feet in length (750M) and approximately 60 feet (20m) below ground level. Within the tunnel system are a number of rooms and eerie passages which are the perfect setting for any ghost hunting enthusiast.
There have been many ghost sightings and apparitions at this location along with negative dark Shadows disappearing  just out of sight down the long atmospheric tunnels, Strange Lights and body shaped mists have also been witnessed by visitors at the Fort on many occasions.
Strange voices, footsteps, knocking and tapping and the cries of children have also been heard regularly at this location.
It is also said that an inquisitive Spirit lady likes to follow guests around the Fort and usually makes her presence known by her scent which is often described as a lovely lavender fragrance.
