Join Dusk Till Dawn Events as we investigate the very haunted and atmospheric Smithills Hall in Bolton.
Smithills Hall which is set amidst formal gardens next to the West Pennine Moors is a magnificent Grade 1 listed building and is steeped to the brim with history and stories of many Ghostly encounters.
First written records relating to the hall began when William Radcliffe obtained the manor from the Hulton family in 1335 and then in 1485 when the last Radcliffe to own the estate died without a male heir, the property was passed to the Bartons who were a wealthy family of sheep owners.
Smithills Hall was home to the Bartons for almost 200 years, until in 1659 the hall and estate was passed by marriage to the Belasyse family. The Belasyses owned many other properties around England and did not really need to keep Smithills Hall and as a result the Hall began a period of neglect.
In 1938, Smithills was sold to Bolton Council for £70,600, and the Victorian parts of the hall became a council residential home and later a day centre until the late 1990s. Conservation work on the older sections allowed part of the Grade 1 listed structure to be opened as a museum in 1963, and in the 1990s, the museum was extended into some of the Victorian parts of the house.
There have been many sightings and reports of Ghosts at this ominous and eerie building such as the solid apparition of a Man and Woman who are said to have appeared wearing clothes with a style of dress from the 15th Century period.
The Green Room is said to be particularly active and is thought to be one of the most haunted rooms in the building here the ghost of a man has been reported to have stood at the top of the stairs not moving but simply just watching before he slowly faded away.
The Chapel has had its fair share of reported ghostly incidents with a member of staff being pushed from behind by an unseen presence whilst removing some wilted flowers from the chapel.
With regular reported poltergeist activity from the Museums’ own staff, footsteps echoing around empty rooms and the sounds of childlike laughter when the museum has closed for the day and staff are locking up for the night this is really a ghost hunt not to be missed!
