Chambercombe Manor is a Norman manor house located near Ilfracombe in Devon.
This atmospheric property dates back to the 11th century and was recorded in the Domesday Book. It is said to be one of the most haunted buildings in the United Kingdom.
The Manor was owned by the Champernon family until the 15th century, when it passed through various different families until 1979 when it was donated to the Chambercombe Manor Trust. The house contains eight period rooms available to view, ranging from Elizabethan to Victorian also including its very own Chapel.
The Manor is well known for its Paranormal Phenomena and has been researched on many occasions and was also the focus of Living TV's Most Haunted series in 2006.
Chambercombe Manors most infamous ghost originated in a room known as the "Haunted Room". This room adjoins another room that was used by Lady Jane Grey who herself descended from the Champernon family also.
The Haunted Room was discovered in 1865 when the owner at the time was making some roof repairs. He noticed the outline of a window that did not have a room associated with it inside.
After exploring the building in the area where the window was, he and his wife knocked through a wall and discovered a large four poster bed which upon lay the Skeletal remains of a Woman.
Legend has it the remains were those of a Woman by the name of Kate Oatway.
Kate Oatway was thought to be a titled lady and whilst visiting relatives at Chambercombe she is said to have been shipwrecked in a storm on the rocks at Hele.
Kate was found and brought to the Manor and placed into the room now known as the haunted room where she later died. The jewellery she was wearing was taken by the occupants of the Manor and the room sealed off from the outside world. The room has no entrance to it now, but a section of the partition has been removed and visitors are still able to see into the very chamber itself.
Other ghosts at Chambercombe include two little girls who have been seen in the upstairs children's bedroom, and a Lady in a long white flowing dress has also been seen by the pond near the café.
Along with a child’s cot known to swing from side to side on its own accord and poltergeist type activity witnessed there are also many cold spots throughout the house, including an old staircase this is an investigation not be missed as we go in search of the Ghosts of this very intriguing location.
