What lies beneath in the vaults of Temple Meads
The name of the station, Temple Meads, derives from the nearby Temple Church, which was built by the Knights Templar in the 12th century, rebuilt in the 14th century, and gutted by bombing during World War II.
The pitch black Temple Meads Station Tunnels which date back to the 1840s harbour a wealth of history once used as an air raid shelter the safe training of track maintenance skills during WWII are the oldest part of Bristol temple meads train station. The Tunnels were also used for storage purposes by the Great western railway for the whole of the network.
This strange and chilling location which has been closed to the Public since the early 1960’s has so many gruesome tales of hangings and mysterious deaths here it is not surprising that down in these very eerie Victorian vaults there have been many reports of ghostly occurrences such as dark Shadows and heavy footsteps witnessed and heard by some members of staff who work at the Station.
